 2017 Preview 


       Hillcrest completed the 2016 season with a 5-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region one, the Jaguars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Hillcrest reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Oakman by a score of 33-0.

       Since 2010, Hillcrest has gone a combined 38-41. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hillcrest has managed to compile a record of 112-165. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 3A and 281st in the AHSAA.

       The Jaguars are led by head coach Clinton Smith who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 13-13 over the past two seasons at Hillcrest. Under his direction the Jaguars have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 13-13 (50.0%).

       The Hillcrest Jaguars will play in Class 3A region one during the 2017 season. The Jaguars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 69-49 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 3A and 38th in the AHSAA.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Jaguars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season.

      Ryan Nettles returns for his Junior season after completing 160 of 282 passes for 2,507 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also rushed for 110 yards.

      Senior Brandon Rudolph (37 catches for 397 yards and 2 TDs), Senior Joshua Jackson (29 catches for 669 yards and 8 TDs) and Senior Kobe Bradley 60 catches for 959 yards and 10 TDs. all return this year.

      The defense returns Junior inside linebacker Jeremy Dees who registered 70 tackles last season.

       The Jaguars open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Linden on Friday, September 1 at Linden Athletic Field. Last year the Linden Patriots finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class 1A region one. The Patriots lost in the semi-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Maplesville by a score of 36-14.

       Hillcrest and Linden have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 2-2-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2016 with Linden winning by a score of 32-7.

       Hillcrest returns 3A All-State Senior receiver Kobe Bradley. He was named to the first team last season.

The first night game played between high school teams in the state occurred on September 23, 1927 when Pike Road and Cloverdale met in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.
